Luckily, I wasn’t the only one who thought so. Throughout the novel, Lecter is nothing if not the ex from hell, lashing out when Graham won’t give him his phone number, trying to remove his new partner from the picture, and generally refusing to let the other man move on. Anyone who enjoys this story but hasn’t read Tomie ought to check out the original as well. It follows an artist who meets a mysterious woman named Tomie and soon discovers she is unable to die and nothing good can come from being around her. It works as a standalone story in Shiver, however. ![]() “Painter” is a chapter taken from Tomie, one of Ito’s most famous works. “Marionette Mansion” shows whether people control puppets, or if puppets control people. “Hanging Blimp” merges the creepy with the absurd as giant heads with nooses fly through the air, hanging people and floating away with them. “Fashion Model” is about a gruesome, fanged, monstrous woman who somehow becomes a professional model, even though opening her mouth reveals rows of jagged (sometimes bloody) teeth. She more resembles a sponge, and she’s not the only person he’s come across who has this issue. In “Shiver,” the story that gave the collection its name, a boy is fascinated by the reclusive girl who lives next door and has porous holes all over her body. The first story, “Used Record,” is about a mysterious vinyl record that leads to obsession and murder when people listen to it. ![]() His short story collection Shiver - which at almost 400 pages of length is longer than average for manga - gives a glimpses into what makes him so popular. Junji Ito is one of Japan’s top horror manga creators. ![]() ![]() ![]() It would be hard to actually classify this book, but it definitely falls within the horror category. The emotions that are conveyed by his narration is perfect and horrifying at the same time. His voice is perfect as the elderly, curmudgeonly Dick. Salzman narrates the Audible version of this book and does his usual fantastic job. Dick has obviously done some things that are truly horrific and early on in the story, you just know that things aren't going to end well! The author has written the book in such a way that sometimes you aren't sure what is real and what is inside Dick's head. This story looks at the horrors of war, PTSD, and the demons that can haunt people. In order to get his story, Alan helps Dick escape the Home where he is living out his last days. Alan is a young Boy Scout, just looking to earn a merit badge by getting a story from Dick. Dick is a Korean War veteran, still fighting the demons that followed him home. This short book will definitely stay with me for a long, long time. ![]() |
